Registering Your Dog or Puppy
Congratulations on getting a new dog or puppy. Now that you have your dog or puppy it is time to decide if you want to get him or her registered. Some people don't feel it is necessary to register their puppy or dog. They feel that the Registration paper work that came with the dog is proof enough to prove the dog is a purebred and who the parents are, and if registration is ever needed it can be done at a later date. And for a late fee. This is true however;
Registration does have a few advantages however. If you ever have to sell the dog then you will have ownership papers instead of puppy registration papers. You can sign up for the AKC microchip Re-Unite program at a slight savings if you do it at the same time you register online.
If you are going to be doing any AKC activities with your dog you will also need the dog registered, as well if you plan on doing any breeding of pure bred dogs, you will want them registered. It is also easier to keep track of any health testing if your dog is registered.
Remember that there is other registries besides AKC, which we use from time to time. If you work with North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association then you will want to register with them as well. If you are thinking that National Shoot To Retrieve is for you, you will need to register you dog with the UKC, United Kennel Club, which is an American Club not a United Kingdom Club. Another registry is the American Field Dog Stud Book.
If you have gotten a dog or puppy from us then it will probably come with AKC registration papers. With these papers you can also register in the other registries as well. Some people have their dog or dogs registered in more that one registry.
You will receive a AKC registration papers or an owner certificate with your dog or puppy when you get it from us. The paperwork will have instructions on them. If you are getting a dog or puppy that has already been registered then you will get a Registration Certificate, this transfer of ownership cannot be done on line. The Certificate will have to have been signed over to you by the previous owner, and you will have to fill the back side of the Certificate out, and sign as new owner and send it in. Below will be a picture of this form, both front and back. This Registration Certificate will be about 3 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches.
The AKC puppy registration form will come as two sheets, and 4 pages. See pictures below of the pages. These are full 8.5 x 11 pages. The first and second pages are the registration pages, and the 2nd and 3rd have the information about the plan options available.
Puppy registration can be done in two ways. Either fill out the form and send it into AKC, or go online. I advise to go online but either will work. Let's walk through both ways.
Page one of the puppy registration form is identified by “AF1BF” at the top right. Page two will have “AF2BF” at the top right of that page. I guess page 1 and page 2 was to much for AKC. Page one and two can easily be separated from pages 3 and 4 because of the perforated edge. You will only send in one sheet, pages 1 and 2.
I never mail in the form, so I may miss something but lets walk though them as if they were going to be mailed in first.
Page one will have the breed, date of birth, sire, dam breeder, and litter owner near the top left. The main registration number that now starts with SS and has 8 numbers following the SS will be near the top right. An example would be SS01012233. The second most important number is near the bottom right. It is the PIN number and is 5 numbers. The 3rd number is the Full or Limited Registration number. This box is near the bottom left. This small box will have 3 numbers in it. This box is used by the litter owner to keep the puppy buyer from having full registration of the puppy. If this box is blacked out by the owner than you cannot have full registration.
Remember when you are registering either on paper or online, AKC is trying to get you to spend more money with them. They will try and get you to buy plans or merchandise. If you think you want it, go ahead. If you got a puppy from us then the pup came with a microchip. You can save a few bucks by signing up with the AKC Re-Unite plan at this time. This will get the micochip out of our name and into yours and it is a one time fee that will both register the chip with them and sign you up for a 24/7 help group if you should lose you dog. I don't add anything else on.
You might want to get a pedigree, but if you get a pup from us you will get a pedigree and probably a family tree. The simple plan comes with 30 days of health coverage at no additional cost. There are other health plans, but I don't know enough about them to be of much use.
Study page one and two enough to understand what is wanted. It's not as easy as you would think, that's why we are trying to help.
Payment info is in the middle of page 1, Dog Name is just below that. You are welcome to use all or part of our kennel name Desert Point's, Desert Point Kennel, or DPK, but don't fill obligated to do so.
Lower right has a place for the microchip number. The bottom left and right of page 1 are for the color and markings of the puppy. 126 is Liver Roan, and 068 is Patched and Ticked. These are 2 common colors and markings but there are others.
On to page 2, AF2BF. The top part of page two is for the owner of the litter or co-owners. The first two boxes are very important. The first box, top left if checked means the litter owner keeps ownership of the puppy. We never check this box, the 2nd box at the top box needs to be checked by the owner of the litter transferring the puppy to you. The owner or owners must also sign their names above where their name is listed. This will be near the top of the page.
Remember nothing on page one or two need to be filled out by you if you are going to register online.
The middle part of page two is for you the new owner or owners if there are going to be more than one. Each additional owner will add $10.00 onto the cost. Just fill in all the areas and boxes and sign where it says New Owner's Signature.
Yeah, you did it. You will find the mailing address near the bottom of page 2 but it is very small. Send to: The American Kennel Club, P.O. Box 900053, Raleigh, NC 27675-9053.
AKC's phone # is 919-233-9767. AKC, has a very helpful group of people who are more than willing to answer all your questions and help with the paper form and online registration as well. They have always been more than helpful. I remember my first call to them about 40 years ago and they were super nice even back then.
Online AKC registration. Have the puppy registration pages one and two with you when you go online as well as you credit card information. Go to Www.akc.org. Go to Owners, and then to Register Your Dog, check the circle next to Register a pure bred dog. Check the circle next to I am a owner, then continue to registration.
You will be asked for your email and the registration number which is the number on page 1, top right that will start with SS and have 8 numbers after that. Example: SS01012233. Click on Continue and you will be asked for the Online Registration Pin Number which is 5 numbers that is found at the bottom right area of page one. You will then be asked for the Full Registration # which is the 3 numbers in a small box near the bottom left. If this box and number is blacked out by the owner then you will not be able to have full registration.
Click on continue and give the date of transfer which is the date the puppy and paper work was given to you. You will be asked for owner info., which is your information. Click on save and continue. Proceed to Puppy information. This is the time to name your puppy. You can use a fancy name that does not even have the name you will be calling the puppy. Many new owner use their last name, then whatever you want next. Your town, street, funny sounding name or names. After a dam or sire, or a dog in the pedigree. All of ours are simple for the most part. Desert Point's Daisy for an example. But like in the name of Tonya we used recognizable names in the pedigree. Desert Point's Hustlinvarius Von Tonya T. Our kennel and Hustlen for Hustler which plays in her pedigree, and varius for Stadivarius dogs in the pedigree and T at the end for her mother Tee. It is a sign of respect when you use another's kennel name, however some may not want you to. If you have one of our pups, feel free to do so if you wish, but don't feel obligated. In full or part. Desert Point's, Desert Point Kennel, or just DPK. So let us say your pup is named Zena. Your last name is Jackson. The pups registered name Might be Jackson's DPK's Zena Princess Warrior. Anyway have fun with the name.
Next you will be asked for Gender, color, markings, and microchip of puppy. Click continue and you will be asked to pick a plan. I pick the second one and that will allow registering your microchip with AKCs Re-Unite plan. You save a few bucks by doing it at this time. You will also get 30 days of health coverage at no extra cost.
Remember that AKC will be asking you to spend more money. Not saying what they are asking is not worth it. Just make sure it is worth it to you. They will ask you if you want to buy a pedigree? We will probably given you one in you packet from us along with a family tree.
Be careful, the way the online questions are set up, you either do or don't check something. If you are not careful then you could have bought something extra that you did not want or need.
Just follow the online instructions, you are almost done. Billing and credit card information.
I hope this helps. Congratulations you done it.
